Fed: Crean denies threat to leadership from gang of six call

Opposition Leader SIMON CREAN denies his leadership is under threat after six partyelders joined forces to demand aspirants to the top job stop undermining him.

They've crossed factional borders to call for the party to unite behind Mr CREAN, afterrumblings about a leadership challenge and a poor performance in opinion polls.

Right-wingers LAURIE BRERETON and ROBERT RAY, Independent PETER COOK and Left powerbrokersKIM CARR, MARTIN FERGUSON and GEORGE CAMPBELL say the murmurs aren't helping the party.

Mr CREAN's denies the call means there's a serious threat to his leadership.

He says the party wants him to focus on policies on core issues like health and educationto take to the next election.

Polls in the last two weeks show the party's failed to make ground with its oppositionto the war on Iraq, and Mr CREAN'S approval rating has slumped to a record low.
