NSW: Government to announce funding to combat depression
The New South Wales government will today announce millions of dollars in funding tohelp fight the war against depression.
Premier BOB CARR will set aside $8.2 million from state coffers to help set up theBlack Dog Institute, a stand-alone facility on the Prince of Wales site at Randwick inSydney's eastern suburbs designed to help those suffering depression.
Named after the term WINSTON CHURCHILL used to describe his own severe bouts of depression,the Black Dog Institute will receive a one-off grant of $3.2 million, then a further $5million over five years to support a number of programs to combat depression and relateddisorders.
Mr CARR says of all Australia's health concerns, depression is one of the most disablingand highly stigmatised - as well as being one of the most deadly.
Up to 20 per cent of the population develop clinical depression over their lifetime.
